What book has made the biggest impact on you and why?
"My parents were also avid readers, and had quite a variety of books. There was a set of six volumes (the titles are lost to me) that attempted to summarize the history of the world. In reading those, I learned that there was much more to our world than what I could see in the many small towns where we lived."
Why are you a Friend of the
W. Anne Gibson-Esmond Station Library?
"I think the Pima County Library system has been a part of my life forever. My fondest memories as a preschooler are coming into Tucson with my mother for our weekly trip to the large red brick building with its grassy green lawns and trees that housed the only public library in Pima County. When I entered school age, the trips became limited to school vacations and summer, but books were always plentiful in our home. As an adult in the 1970’s my husband and I moved to the Rincon Valley, now a part of Vail. There I ran and was elected to the Vail School District Governing Board. It was there that reading, which I had taken for granted, became a top priority with the philosophy of 'if one can read, one can do anything.' It became a goal in later years to promote a public library to serve Southeast Pima County. After ten years of hounding the powers that be, they gave in and the Esmond Station Public Library became a reality. I continue my service through the Friends."
How did reading shape your life?
"I can hardly think of any part of my that has not been molded by books. Books have always been my friends and how I spend my days (currently in the Vail Academy High School library). I discuss books with students, teachers and other volunteers every single day."
Is there a book you find yourself reading again and again?
"Yes, Virgin River by Robyn Carr.
I love the story and it always makes me smile!"
Would you rather: Read inside a cozy log cabin next to the fireplace or outside on a warm, sandy beach?
"Neither. For me the ideal spot is under the awning of our camping trailer at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon."
Why are you a Friend of the W. Anne Gibson-Esmond Station Library?
"As a mom and an early education professional, I bring both perspectives to the work of the Friends. Research tells us a child's brain is 90% developed before entering kindergarten with a majority of brain building happening in the first three years! It is never too early to begin instilling a love for literacy!"
What is your favorite book and why?
"It is really hard to pick a favorite book, I have so many, and some I surely loved, but have forgotten. One of my recent favorites was Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose about the Lewis and Clark Expedition."
The Esmond Friends express our gratitude to recently departed board members, Mark Favetti and Greg Kempi for their service and leadership. With thanks and appreciation.
